Price alerts and watching a booking
Optional emails about one stay: when its price drops, when a stay you already booked is listed for less, and before its free cancellation ends. No account, and one click stops them.
How do price-drop alerts work?
Type your email in the price-drop box on the banner or on the web price checker, and Underbook checks the going rate for that stay once a day and emails you if it is at least 5% lower on two daily checks in a row.
- What you get: a confirmation, a note when a rate first appears if there was none yet, and at most one drop alert. The emails are about that stay only.
- No account: your email is stored with the stay you asked about and used only to email you about it (privacy policy).
- It stops after your check-out date, and one click on Unsubscribe in any of its emails stops it sooner (how to stop alerts).
- The extension keeps your email on your device, so next time one tap sets a watch; tap "not you? change email" to use another address.
- On the banner, from version 0.5.33, the watch is in the currency the banner showed; earlier versions watch the price in US dollars.
When the alert comes, open the stay and check the room and the total before you book. More: hotel price drop alerts.
Can Underbook watch a hotel I already booked?
Yes: tick "I already booked this stay", enter the price you paid per night (all-in) and, if you know it, the last day of free cancellation, and Underbook checks once a day until then and emails you once if a listed rate is at least 5% lower on two daily checks in a row, so you can rebook.
- Where: on the web price checker for everyone, on the extension's banner from version 0.5.29, and from version 0.5.34 on the booking confirmation page of Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com or Agoda right after you book, with the details filled in (how that works).
- The drop must also be at least 5 a night in dollars, euros or pounds, or a similar amount in your currency.
- A watch set from a booking confirmation page also gets two reminders before your free cancellation ends (the reminders).
- Without a free-cancellation date it checks until check-in. The record is deleted automatically the day after check-out.
- It never needs your booking or confirmation number, your name or any payment details, so please do not type them in. Underbook does not see your booking and does not contact the hotel or the booking site: if you rebook, you book the new rate and cancel the old one yourself, after checking the room.
More: watch my booking.
Why does Underbook offer to watch my booking on the confirmation page?
Because right after you book is when you have every detail a watch needs: on the booking confirmation page of Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com or Agoda, Underbook can offer, once per booking, to watch that stay for a lower rate, with the details filled in from the page, and it sends nothing unless you type your email and press "Watch this booking".
- When it shows: only on a confirmation page in English where it can read the hotel, your dates and a free-cancellation date at least two days away and no later than check-in. A non-refundable or cancelled booking, or a page with two stays, gets no card, and the sites' checkout and payment steps never show it.
- What it reads: the hotel's name and town, your check-in and check-out dates, the number of adults, the total or nightly price and its currency, and the date your free cancellation ends. It finds them by comparing short pieces of text on the page with a fixed list of labels (such as "Check-in" or "Free cancellation until") and keeping only the value next to a match, and in the page's standard booking markup. The card shows the stay, and you can change the price and the free-cancellation date: the price per night comes from the page's total divided by the nights (or its nightly price), so change it if it leaves out taxes or fees.
- What it never reads: your booking or confirmation number, PIN, name, email address, phone number, postal address or payment details. Nothing of the page's address is kept or sent.
- Nothing is sent while the card is shown, and closing it or pressing "No thanks" sends nothing. Only "Watch this booking" sends your email, the hotel and its town, the dates, the number of adults, the price per night you confirmed, its currency, the market it is priced in, the free-cancellation date and the booking site's name, with a marker that the watch was set from a confirmation page and asks for the reminders.
- Once per booking: to remember that, the extension keeps on your device a short code made from the site, the hotel name and the dates, with the check-out date (no booking number, name or price), deleted after check-out. A click on the Underbook icon on that page shows the card again.
- Then it works like any watch on a booked stay: a check once a day until your free cancellation ends, one email if a listed rate is at least 5% lower on two daily checks in a row, and up to two reminders before the deadline (the reminders). Underbook never cancels or changes a booking: you rebook and cancel yourself, after checking the room.
- It is in version 0.5.34 and later of the extension; your browser's add-on store updates Underbook automatically, each store on its own schedule (which version do I have?).
Will Underbook remind me before my free cancellation ends?
Yes, for a watch you set from a booking confirmation page: Underbook emails you about a week before and the day before your free cancellation ends, even when no lower rate shows up, and never more than those two reminders.
- Which watches: only one set with the card on a booking confirmation page (version 0.5.34 and later of the extension). A watch set with "I already booked this stay" on a hotel page or on the web price checker gets no reminders.
- Set late: each reminder goes only to a watch set before that reminder's day began, so a watch set 2 to 7 days before the deadline gets only the day-before reminder, as the card and the confirmation email say.
- None after a price alert, because that email already names your free-cancellation date, and none after your free cancellation has ended.
- The reminder names your free-cancellation date, as it was on your booking page: check the exact time on your confirmation, since it may be in the hotel's time zone. Underbook cannot cancel or change a booking; if your plans have changed, cancel on the site you booked on.
- To stop them: click Unsubscribe at the bottom of any email about that booking, or write to hi@underbook.co. That stops the whole watch, its reminders and its price alert together, and deletes it; there is no way to stop only the reminders. Removing the extension does not stop them (how to stop alerts).
How do I stop price alerts?
Click Unsubscribe at the bottom of any Underbook email: one click stops that watch and deletes it, and no more email about that stay is sent.
- Your mail app's own Unsubscribe button, where it shows one for Underbook's emails, does the same.
- Each watch is separate: unsubscribing stops only the stay that email is about, and for a watch set from a booking confirmation page it also stops the free-cancellation reminders.
- Watches also end by themselves: a price-drop alert after your check-out date, a watch on a booked stay at your free-cancellation date, or at check-in if you gave none.
- Removing the extension does not stop a watch, because watches run on Underbook's service, not in your browser. Use the Unsubscribe link.
- No email to hand? Write to hi@underbook.co, or reply to any Underbook email, and we will stop the watch.
