Step by step

How to rebook a hotel for a lower price
Book the new one first. Cancel the old one second.

If your booking has free cancellation, a lower price for the same stay is one you can still take. The method is simple, but the order matters, and so does the clock: miss the deadline by an hour and the old booking is no longer free to cancel. Here is the checklist we would follow ourselves.

For a stay you can cancel for free. Free · no account · we never see your booking number or payment details.

Before you start: can you cancel for free?

Open your confirmation and find the cancellation policy. You are looking for a line like "free cancellation until" a date and time. If the rate says non-refundable or prepaid with no refund, rebooking won't help you; see what still works on a non-refundable booking instead.

If the lower price is on another website and you booked on Booking.com, a price match claim is a second option that keeps your booking: how Booking.com's We Price Match works. If you booked direct with Marriott or Hilton less than 24 hours ago, read their best rate guarantees first.

The six steps

  1. 1

Write down the exact deadline, with its time zone

Note the date, the time, and whose time it is. Booking.com's own guide to cancelling says the deadline is usually calculated in the hotel's local time zone, not yours. A hotel nine hours ahead of you can have a deadline that passes in your afternoon. If the confirmation gives a date with no time, plan around the earliest reading, the start of that day in hotel time, until the site tells you otherwise.

  2. 2

Check that the new rate is the same stay

Same hotel, same dates, same number of guests, and the same room: type, bed and view. Many cheaper listings don't name the room at all, which is why the same hotel can show different prices. Check the meal plan too. A rate without breakfast is cheaper for a reason.

  3. 3

    Compare totals, not headlines

Go to the checkout page of the new rate and read the total for the whole stay with taxes and fees, then compare it with the total on your confirmation. A lower nightly price that adds a resort fee or leaves taxes for later can end up costing more. Use the same currency for both. If you are giving up something real by switching, such as loyalty points or a member perk from booking direct, count that too.

  4. 4

Read the new rate's cancellation terms

If the new rate is also free to cancel, you can repeat all this if the price falls again. If it is non-refundable, switching locks you in: a later drop won't help, and your plans can't change for free. Sometimes that trade is worth it. Decide on purpose. Our refundable vs non-refundable guide has the math.

  5. 5

Book the new rate, and wait for the confirmation

Book while the rate is live, and don't touch the old booking until the new confirmation email has arrived with the dates and room you expect. For a short time you hold two bookings. That is the point: you are never left with none.

  6. 6

Cancel the old booking before the deadline, and keep the proof

Cancel where you booked: Booking.com's guide, for example, says to log in to your account, find the reservation and look for the cancel or modify options. Save the cancellation email, and watch your card until any charge or hold from the old booking is gone. If something looks wrong, contact the site with the cancellation confirmation in hand.

The mistakes that cost money

  • ⚠️ Cancelling first. The cheaper rate can sell out while you cancel.
  • ⚠️ Reading the deadline in your own time zone. It is usually the hotel's.
  • ⚠️ Rebooking a different room. A cheaper listing that names no room may not be yours.
  • ⚠️ Comparing the nightly price. Compare the total with taxes and fees.
  • ⚠️ Forgetting the old booking. Two live bookings means two bills.
  • ⚠️ Chasing tiny drops. A switch takes time and has its own risks; small moves are often not worth it.

How big a drop is worth a rebook?

That is your call, but here is the line our booking watch uses: a listed rate at least 5% lower than what you paid, and at least $5 a night lower (or about that in your currency), seen on two daily checks in a row. One low reading can be noise, so it waits for a second day. Below that, the time and the room risk of a switch can outweigh the difference.

Prices do move after you book, in both directions; whether they drop closer to the date depends on the hotel and the dates. The hard part is noticing a drop while you can still cancel.

Let us do the checking

Step one of all this is knowing the price fell, before your deadline. We can watch your stay for you.

  • You tell us what you paid per night, with taxes and fees, and the last day you can cancel for free.
  • We check the rates listed for your hotel and dates once a day.
  • We email you once if a listed rate is at least 5% lower than what you paid (and at least $5 a night lower, or about that in your currency) on two daily checks in a row. The email names the site and the price.
  • You check the room before you rebook. A lower rate can be for another room, bed type or meal plan. You book and cancel yourself; we never do either.
  • We stop at your free-cancellation date. We need two checks in a row, so a rate that first drops on your deadline day itself comes too late for an alert.

Free, no account. We never ask for your booking number, your name or your payment details.

Rebooking a hotel: common questions

Can I cancel and rebook a hotel at a lower price?

Yes, if your booking has free cancellation and the deadline has not passed. Book the lower rate first, wait for its confirmation, then cancel the original before its deadline. If your rate is non-refundable, cancelling will not get your money back, so rebooking does not help.

Should I cancel my hotel first or book the new one first?

Book the new one first. If you cancel first, the cheaper rate can sell out or change while you do it, and you can end up with no room, or a worse price. Holding two bookings for a few minutes is the safe order, as long as you then cancel the old one before its deadline.

What time zone is a hotel cancellation deadline in?

Check the exact time on your confirmation. Booking.com's own guide to cancelling says the deadline is usually calculated in the hotel's local time zone, not yours, so for a hotel in another time zone, convert the deadline to your own time before you plan around it.

How much should a hotel price drop before I rebook?

That depends on how much the switch costs you in time and risk. Underbook's booking watch only emails when a listed rate is at least 5% lower than what you paid, and at least $5 a night lower, on two daily checks in a row, because smaller or one-day moves are often not worth a rebook. Compare totals with taxes and fees, and check the room.

Does rebooking work if the cheaper price is on a different site?

Yes. You can book the lower rate on any site and cancel the original where you booked it, as long as the original still has free cancellation. Check that the new listing is the same room, guests and meal plan, and read its cancellation terms before you book.

The hard part is noticing in time.

Tell us what you paid and when your free cancellation ends. We check once a day until then and email you once if a listed rate is at least 5% lower than what you paid (and at least $5 a night lower, or about that in your currency) on two daily checks in a row. You check the room and rebook yourself.
