Do hotel price match guarantees actually work?

A "we price match" promise sounds like a safety net. In practice it asks you to do the hard part: find the exact same room, same dates, same cancellation policy cheaper somewhere else after you've already booked, then prove it and file a claim inside a short window. Most claims die on a technicality. And the net just got smaller — Expedia and Hotels.com ended their Hotel Price Guarantee on July 28, 2026, with no replacement. Here's what still exists, why the claims are so hard to win, and the one thing that beats any guarantee.

How a price match claim really works
The mechanics are almost always the same. You book first. Then, if you later find the same stay for less somewhere else, you contact the booking site — usually with a screenshot — and ask them to match it. They verify the rate and, if it qualifies, either adjust your reservation or refund the difference. On Booking.com's "We Price Match," the lower price has to be for the same room type, dates, cancellation policy and occupancy, and you have to claim it before check-in. That's a genuine promise. It's also a narrow one, and the narrowness is the point.
Here's why so many claims quietly fail. The "cheaper" rate you found is a member-only or app-only price, which doesn't count as publicly available. Or it's a package rate bundled with a flight, so it isn't the same product. Or the cancellation policy is different — a non-refundable rate can't be matched against your refundable one. Or the currency is different and the "lower" number vanishes once it's converted. Or the rate simply sold out before an agent could verify it. Each of these is a legitimate reason to deny a claim, and together they're why a guarantee that sounds airtight ends up honored a small fraction of the time. Before you rely on any guarantee, check three things
- 1. Who holds the reservation. A hotel chain's best-rate guarantee almost always requires you to have booked direct with the chain — a third-party booking means only that site's policy applies.

Are hotel price match guarantees a scam?
No. They're real promises, and sites like Booking.com do honor qualifying claims. But they're written to be narrow, and they put all the work on you: you have to find the exact same room, dates, occupancy and cancellation policy cheaper somewhere else, prove it, and claim it in a short window before check-in. Did Expedia and Hotels.com really end their price guarantee?

Can I use a hotel brand's best-rate guarantee if I booked through Expedia or Booking.com?
Almost never. Hotel chain best-rate guarantees are designed to reward booking direct, so they generally require that the reservation was made on the chain's own site or app. If you booked the same hotel through a third-party site, that site owns the reservation and the chain's guarantee doesn't apply; your only price-adjustment path is that site's own policy. Always check who holds your booking before you count on a chain guarantee.
