Honest review

Is Agoda legit?
Short answer: yes, with real tradeoffs.

Agoda is a real, established booking platform owned by Booking Holdings, the same parent as Booking.com, Priceline, and Kayak. Its prices are sometimes lower than booking direct, a little more often in Asia-Pacific, but in our data they more often matched the hotel's own price or came in above it. The rooms are real and confirmed bookings go through. The catch is that the cheapest rates are usually prepaid, priced in a currency that can shift the final charge, and supported through Agoda rather than the hotel. Here is the honest breakdown, and how to check whether a given deal actually holds up.

If you book Agoda through Underbook we may earn a commission, which never changes which rate we show. We lead with the lowest price we found, whoever lists it, and say whether it names your room.

The verdict, in plain terms

Legit, and sometimes cheaper than the hotel's own site, though usually not; read the terms and confirm the total before you commit.

Where Agoda is genuinely good

  • Real, major platform backed by Booking Holdings
  • Member and promo rates are often well below direct
  • Deep inventory, especially strong across Asia-Pacific
  • Good for firm plans on a room you're sure about

Where you should be careful

  • The cheapest rates are usually prepaid & non-refundable
  • The headline can exclude taxes or fees until checkout
  • Currency conversion can move the final card charge
  • Problems go through Agoda, not the hotel front desk

Why is it sometimes cheaper than the hotel's own site?

This is the question that makes people suspicious, and the answer is mostly boring, not shady. Agoda mixes member-only rates, package pricing, wholesale inventory, and heavy promotions, and it sometimes shows the room price before taxes and fees so the headline number looks lower until you reach checkout. Hotels also release some inventory to a large distributor like Agoda below their public rate to keep rooms full, and Agoda can pass part of that discount on to win your booking.

How often that happens, from our September 25 snapshot (stays 35 days out, searched from the US in USD, hotels in 25 cities across the US, Europe and Asia-Pacific): at the 216 hotels where Google Hotels listed both Agoda and the hotel's own site, Agoda was more than 1% cheaper at 60, within 1% at 94, and more than 1% higher at 62. In Asia-Pacific it was cheaper at 23 of 60, more often than in the US (19 of 78) or Europe (18 of 78), but still a minority. So check both. When it is cheaper, what you trade for the saving is flexibility and clarity on the final number: the cheapest rates are prepaid and non-refundable, the displayed price may sit in another currency so your bank's conversion moves the total, and if a booking goes sideways you are dealing with Agoda's support rather than walking up to the hotel desk. That is a fine trade when your dates are locked, and a worse one when they aren't.

Before you book a prepaid Agoda rate, check three things

  • 1. The all-in total. Compare the price after taxes and fees, and in your own currency, not the headline nightly rate.
  • 2. The room type. Make sure it's the same room you'd book direct, not a smaller or "run of house" version.
  • 3. The cancellation terms. A $40 saving isn't worth it if your plans might change and the rate is non-refundable.

Measured, September 22 to October 1, 2026

How often Agoda was the cheapest, across 15 price snapshots

Across 15 snapshots taken between September 22 and October 1, 2026, we priced the same two-night stay on every booking site Google Hotels lists: 6,254 hotel prices in 348 cities. At 4,512 of them some site undercut the going rate by 5% or more. Agoda was the cheapest site at 264 of those 4,512, typically 18% below the going rate, and at 181 of those 264 it named the room its price was for. For comparison, Super.com was the cheapest site most often (1,239 hotels) and named a room at 0.

So some of its lower prices say which room they buy and some do not: either way, check the room name and cancellation terms before you pay.

Cancellation labels, 14 snapshots, September 25 to October 1, 2026: At 1,009 of the 3,434 hotels where it was listed (29%), an Agoda listing carried Google's free-cancellation label. Is free cancellation worth it?

How to check the deal yourself

The honest way to know if an Agoda rate is a good deal is to compare it, the all-in total for the exact same room and dates, against the hotel's own site and one or two other booking sites, and to read the cancellation terms alongside the price. Doing that by hand across five tabs is tedious, which is exactly why most people don't bother and just trust the first number they see.

Underbook is a free browser extension that does that comparison for you while you shop. When you're looking at a hotel, it checks other booking sites for the same hotel and dates and shows you the prices side by side (all-in when the sites report taxes and fees) and says whether the cheaper listing names the same room. When the room names don't match, it says to check before booking instead of pretending. If you book Agoda through Underbook we may earn a commission, which never changes which rate we show. We just show their rate when it's the one that saves you money.

Agoda — common questions

Is Agoda a scam?

No. It's a real, established booking platform owned by Booking Holdings, and the hotel bookings are genuine. The frustration people report is almost always about the terms, prepaid non-refundable rates, slower cancellations, and a final charge that differs from the headline once taxes or currency conversion are added, rather than the booking not existing. Confirm the all-in total and the cancellation policy before you commit and you avoid the most common complaints.

Why is my card charged a different amount than the price shown?

This is the most common surprise on Agoda. The headline nightly rate can exclude taxes and local fees until checkout, and if the room is priced in another currency your bank's conversion, plus any foreign-transaction fee, can move the final number. It usually isn't a hidden overcharge, it's the all-in total in your currency. Always check the full breakdown at checkout so the price you approve is the price you pay.

Can I cancel an Agoda booking?

It depends on the rate you booked. Some are refundable within a window; the cheapest are non-refundable. Cancellation and changes go through Agoda rather than the hotel, which is slower than dealing with the property directly. Always check the specific rate's terms at checkout, this is the single most important thing to verify before paying.

Does Underbook get paid to recommend Agoda?

Not for recommending it: we name Agoda when it lists the lowest price we found, or when it lists free cancellation or names the room at about the same price (within 2%). If you book Agoda through Underbook we may earn a commission, which never changes which rate we show. Underbook surfaces whichever site has the cheaper rate, says whether it names your room, and shows the lower price even when it earns nothing from it.

A Hong Kong agency next to Agoda

hutchgo, the online travel agency of Hutchison Travel (owned by CK Hutchison Holdings), was listed at 173 hotels in our snapshots, 151 of them in Asia-Pacific. The site whose price it matched most often was Agoda, at 22 of 148 hotels listing both: Is hutchgo legit?

Agoda and Trip.com, side by side

Agoda and Trip.com were both listed at 1,684 hotels in our snapshots. On the same tax footing, Agoda was cheaper about twice as often as Trip.com, and where Agoda was cheaper its listing named the room more often but offered free cancellation less often: Agoda vs Trip.com.
