Measured, September 25 to October 10, 2026

Hotel booking sites compared,
pair by pair.

Short answer: the big booking sites usually landed close, and which one was lower depended on the hotel. In 12 of the 18 pairs below, the two prices were within $2 a night at more than half the hotels where both were on the same tax footing. Across all 18, that share ran from 20% (trivago and Booking.com) to 87% (Expedia and Hotels.com). So check two or three sites for your own dates, and compare the all-in total, not the headline rate.

Measured, not sponsored: the figures come from our own price snapshots. If you book through a link from Underbook we may earn a commission from the booking site you choose, at no cost to you, and it does not change what we show.

Measured, September 25 to October 10, 2026

Every pair, side by side

In our 16 price snapshots of September 25 to October 10, 2026 we recorded every seller Google Hotels listed for the same two-night stay at 6,620 hotels in 368 cities, and took each site's lowest price at each hotel: all-in with taxes and fees where the site reported them, otherwise its listed rate. Both: hotels listing both sites. Same footing: of those, the hotels where both prices were before tax, both after tax, or no tax showed. Within $2: of those, the share where the two were $2 a night apart or less. Then how many hotels each site was more than 2% lower, and the hotels left out because one price looked before tax and the other after.

Tax footing: our data keeps one price per listing without saying whether it includes tax, so we infer it from the hotel's going rate (the price most sites agreed on) with and without taxes. Where the after-tax going rate was 10% or more above the before-tax one, a price nearer the after-tax rate counts as after tax and one nearer the before-tax rate as before tax; where the two were under 2% apart, any two prices count as the same footing; hotels in between are left out. Prices from one moment in each snapshot, as Google Hotels showed them to a US searcher in US dollars, not completed bookings. Method and the per-hotel CSVs: the hotel price study.

Three comparisons with a page of their own

Expedia vs Booking.com, Hotels.com vs Booking.com and Booking.com vs booking direct with the hotel each have a page, with figures over the snapshots that page states. For a site you do not know, see lesser-known hotel booking sites: are they legit?, and for why one hotel has different prices at all, why prices differ across sites.
