Is trivago legit?
Short answer: yes, with one catch.
Yes. Trivago is a real, established hotel metasearch, founded in 2005 in Germany, publicly traded on the Nasdaq, and majority-owned by Expedia Group. It doesn't sell rooms itself. It compares prices from booking sites and the hotel, then sends you off to one of them to book. The one catch: booking sites bid for the deal it puts at the top, so that highlighted deal is partly a paid placement, and the site it hands you to sets the real terms and the final all-in total. So the highlighted number isn't always the lowest once taxes and fees land. Here's the honest breakdown, and how to check whether a given deal actually holds up.

How a metasearch actually makes money
This is the part that trips people up, and the answer is mostly boring, not shady. Trivago is a metasearch, not a booking site. It gathers a headline price for a hotel from lots of booking sites, lines them up, and earns a referral fee when you click through to one of them. Because that fee is how it gets paid, the most prominent slot on the page, the big highlighted deal, is one booking sites can bid to occupy. It's a real price, but it's partly an ad, not purely the lowest total available.
That has two practical consequences. First, the headline rate trivago shows can exclude taxes, resort fees, or currency conversion that only appear at the booking site's checkout, so the number you compare isn't always the number you pay. Second, trivago hands you off to another site to actually book, which means that site sets the cancellation terms, the support, and the final all-in charge, not trivago. None of that makes it a scam. It just means the highlighted deal is a starting point to verify, not a finish line. The same referral model runs every metasearch, from Kayak to Skyscanner.
Before you trust the highlighted trivago deal, check three things
- 1. The all-in total. Compare the price after taxes and fees, and in your own currency, not the headline nightly rate.
- 2. The hotel's own site. Check it directly too. A member or loyalty rate can beat every OTA and sometimes isn't in trivago's list.
- 3. The cancellation terms. The cheapest slot is often prepaid and non-refundable, which isn't worth a small saving if your plans might change.
One thing on trivago's side is not the metasearch: trivago DEALS, a separate booking site at trivago.deals. Its own site says a booking there is a booking directly with a licensed trivago brand, so there you do book and pay with trivago DEALS. Google Hotels lists it as a seller in its own right, and the measured box below shows how its prices compared.

How often trivago DEALS was the cheapest, across 15 price snapshots
Across 15 snapshots taken between September 22 and October 1, 2026, we priced the same two-night stay on every booking site Google Hotels lists: 6,254 hotel prices in 348 cities. At 4,512 of them some site undercut the going rate by 5% or more. trivago DEALS was the cheapest site at 210 of those 4,512, typically 15% below the going rate, and at none of those 210 did it name the room its price was for. For comparison, Super.com was the cheapest site most often (1,239 hotels) and named a room at 0.
So a trivago DEALS price that beats everyone is worth opening, but compare the room name and cancellation terms before you pay.

How to check the deal yourself
The honest way to know if a trivago deal is really the best price is to compare it, the all-in total for the exact same room and dates, against the hotel's own site and one or two other booking sites, and to read the cancellation terms alongside the price. Doing that by hand across five tabs is tedious, which is exactly why most people don't bother and just click the highlighted number.

Do I book on trivago or somewhere else?
Somewhere else. Trivago doesn't process the booking itself, it sends you to a booking site or the hotel to complete it. That means the cancellation policy, the customer support, and the payment all sit with the site you get sent to, not with trivago. Always read that site's specific rate terms at checkout, this is the single most important thing to verify before paying.

It is a real booking site under the trivago name, and a different thing from the trivago comparison. Its own site, trivago.deals, says that when you book there you are booking directly with a licensed trivago brand, so you pay trivago DEALS and its terms apply. Google Hotels lists it as a seller like any booking site; the measured box above shows how often it had the lowest price, whether it named the room, and how often it showed free cancellation. Algotels now runs under the same name (its footer reads Algotels by trivago DEALS Ltd.).
