This is the question that makes people suspicious, and the answer is mostly boring, not shady. Priceline's biggest discounts come from Express Deals: hotels quietly release rooms at a lower rate on the condition that their name stays hidden until after you book, so they can fill empty rooms without publicly undercutting their own published price. You see the neighborhood, the star rating, the guest score, and the main amenities, but not the property name until the charge goes through. How often a named rate is cheaper, from our September 25 snapshot (stays 35 days out, US market, USD): at the 242 hotels where Google Hotels listed both Priceline and the hotel's own site, Priceline was more than 1% cheaper at 41, within 1% at 122, and more than 1% higher at 79. Express Deals are not listed there, so we have not measured those. When an Express Deal is cheaper, what you trade for the saving is certainty and flexibility: Express Deals are prepaid and non-refundable, you can't change or cancel, and you only find out exactly which hotel you booked after you pay. Resort fees and local taxes can also be added at the property or at checkout, so the headline can look lower than the all-in total. That is a fine trade when your dates are locked and the area and star rating are enough to commit, and a worse one when they aren't.

Before you book a prepaid Priceline rate, check three things

1. The all-in total. Compare the price after taxes and fees, including any resort fee, not the headline nightly rate.
2. What you actually get. On an Express Deal, weigh the discount against not knowing the exact hotel until you've paid.
3. The cancellation terms. A $40 saving isn't worth it if your plans might change and the rate is non-refundable.

Priceline in our price data: 4,380 hotels, 14 snapshots

In our 14 price snapshots of September 25 to October 1, 2026 (5,830 hotel prices in 348 cities, every booking site Google Hotels lists), Google Hotels listed Priceline at 4,380 hotels.

Against the going rate (the price most sites agree on), compared like with like at 3,946 of those hotels: within 2% at 2,537 (64%), 5% or more below at 184 (5%), more than 2% above at 1,107 (28%).
Lowest price of all: of the 4,181 hotels where some site was 5% or more below the going rate, Priceline had the lowest price at 73. It named a room at 51 of those 73, and on our original room check its room name matched the room at the going rate at 37.
Rooms and cancellation: it named a room on 1,663 of 4,380 listings (38%) and carried Google's free-cancellation label on 1,655 of 4,380 (38%).
Taxes: where taxes and fees added 10% or more, its price sat near the all-in going rate, taxes included, at 2,507 of 2,743 hotels (91%).
Against the hotel's own site, at the 2,535 hotels listing both, compared like with like: within 1% at 1,476 (58%; the same to the dollar at 1,293), Priceline more than 1% lower at 388 (15%) and more than 1% higher at 671 (26%). This pools all 14 snapshots, so it differs from the single September 25 snapshot quoted above.

So Priceline's named-hotel price was usually at or near the going rate, and more often above it than below it. When it had the lowest price, it usually said which room: 51 of 73 times. Express Deals are not listed on Google Hotels, so none of these figures is about them.

Each snapshot: US market, USD, prices from one moment for a two-night stay, not completed bookings. "Like with like" means before tax against before tax and all-in against all-in, inferred from the hotel's two going rates; hotels where that could not be read are left out. How to check the deal yourself

The honest way to know if a Priceline rate is a good deal is to compare it, the all-in total for a comparable room and dates, against the hotel's own site and one or two other booking sites, and to read the cancellation terms alongside the price. Doing that by hand across five tabs is tedious, which is exactly why most people don't bother and just trust the first number they see.

BusinessHotels.com says it is powered by Priceline Partner Solutions, part of Priceline.com LLC; it showed the same price as Priceline at 262 of 834 hotels listing both, and where they differed on the same tax footing Priceline was lower at 364 and it at 130 (Is BusinessHotels.com legit?).
