Is Hotwire legit?
Short answer: yes, but you book Hot Rates partly blind.
Yes. Hotwire is a real online travel agency owned by Expedia Group, the same company behind Expedia, Hotels.com, Orbitz, and Travelocity, and the bookings go through. The catch is its signature "Hot Rate" hotel: you see the star rating, the neighborhood, and the price, but not the hotel's name until after you pay, and those bookings are final: no refunds, no changes. You're trusting a room you can only partly see. Here's the honest breakdown.

The verdict, in plain terms
A legitimate Expedia Group site with discounted opaque rates — as long as you're comfortable not knowing the exact hotel and never getting your money back.

Why can the rates be cheaper?
The suspicious part — a room well under the hotel's own price — has a boring explanation, not a shady one. Hotels routinely have unsold rooms they'd rather fill at a discount than leave empty, but they don't want to advertise a fire-sale price under their own name, because that undercuts their published rate and upsets guests who paid full price. Selling the room anonymously through Hotwire's opaque Hot Rate solves that: the hotel unloads the empty room cheaply, and its public rate stays intact because no one can see which hotel gave the discount.
So a Hot Rate discount has a real source, and hiding the hotel name is not a trick. We have not measured how large Hot Rate discounts are: Hot Rates are not listed on Google Hotels, where our price data comes from, and Hotwire did not appear as a seller in any of the 14 price snapshots that recorded every seller. Hiding the name is the entire mechanism that unlocks the low price. What you trade for it is certainty and flexibility: you're committing before you know exactly where you'll stay, the rate is prepaid and non-refundable, and if plans change you can't undo it. That's a fine deal when your dates are locked and the neighborhood and star level matter more than the specific brand — and a bad one when you need a particular hotel, loyalty points, or the ability to cancel.
Before you book a Hotwire Hot Rate, check three things
- 1. The all-in total. Compare the price after taxes and fees against the transparent, named rate for the same tier — the discount has to beat what you could book openly.
- 2. The map area and star level. The neighborhood outline and star rating are all you get up front, so make sure both are ones you'd actually accept sight-unseen.
- 3. The cancellation terms. Hot Rates are non-refundable — only book one when your dates truly won't move.
Does Hotwire show up on Google Hotels?
Not in our data. In 14 snapshots from September 25 to October 1, 2026 we recorded every seller Google Hotels listed for 5,830 hotels in 348 cities (US market, a two-night stay 35 days out): 4,519 different sellers, from the big booking sites to hotels' own websites. Hotwire was not among them at any of the 5,830 hotels.
So a Google Hotels comparison will not show you Hotwire's price. To judge a deal on Hotwire, take its all-in total, room and cancellation terms and compare them with the same dates on the sites Google Hotels does list, for example with our free price checker. How to check the deal yourself
With an opaque Hot Rate you can't fully verify the deal before booking, because the hotel name is hidden — that's the inherent tradeoff, and no tool can see through it. What you can do is compare on the transparent side: Hotwire's named rates, and any specific hotel you're weighing, against the hotel's own site and other booking sites for the exact same room and dates, all-in after taxes and fees. Doing that by hand across five tabs is tedious, which is exactly why most people skip it and trust the first price they see.
Underbook is a free Chrome extension that does that comparison for you while you shop. On a hotel page it can read, it checks the same dates on other booking sites, shows the prices side by side (all-in when the sites report taxes and fees), and says whether a cheaper listing names the same room or needs a check. It runs on Hotwire's named-hotel pages too (tested September 2026). A Hot Rate hides the hotel's name until you pay, so there it has nothing to check, and the useful number is the named price elsewhere that the blind rate has to beat. When the room names don't match, it says to check before booking instead of pretending. We earn nothing from Hotwire; we just show the cheaper rate when there is one.

Is Hotwire a scam?
No. Hotwire is an established online travel agency owned by Expedia Group — the same parent as Expedia, Hotels.com, Orbitz, and Travelocity. The hotels are real and the reservations are genuine. Most complaints aren't about fake bookings; they're about the terms of the opaque Hot Rate — not knowing the exact hotel until after paying, and the rate being non-refundable. Read what you're committing to before you book and you avoid the most common frustrations.
Do you find out which hotel you booked?
With a Hot Rate you find out the exact hotel only after you complete the purchase — before that you see the star rating, a neighborhood on a map, the guest score, and the main amenities, but not the name. Hotwire also sells regular, transparent rates where the hotel is named up front; those cost a little more but let you see exactly what you're getting. If knowing the hotel matters to you, book the named rate, not the Hot Rate.
Can I cancel or change a Hotwire booking?
Hot Rate hotel bookings are prepaid, non-refundable, and can't be changed or cancelled — that's the firm rule in exchange for the lower price. Hotwire's transparent, named rates sometimes allow free cancellation within a window, so check the specific rate's terms before paying. If there's any chance your plans shift, the opaque Hot Rate is the wrong choice.
Do I earn hotel loyalty points on a Hotwire stay?
Usually not on Hot Rate bookings. Because the room is sold through a third party at a discounted, opaque rate, most hotel loyalty programs don't award points or honor elite benefits like upgrades or late checkout for it. If earning points or using status is important to you, that lost value can eat into the savings — worth weighing against how much cheaper the Hot Rate actually is.
