Do hotel price alerts work?
Often, if your booking is refundable: on our daily prices for 12 US hotels (one July 2026 stay, read from June 3, 2026), a 5% drop alert would have fired at 7. But the rate ended higher at 8 of the 12, so an alert helps only if you can still rebook.
To check your own stay today, Underbook's free hotel price checker shows the price each booking site lists on Google Hotels for that hotel and dates, and whether a lower listing names the same room, and it can email you if the going rate for that stay drops: https://underbook.co/hotel-price-checker.

Measured, June 3 to July 25, 2026
What a 5% alert would have caught, hotel by hotel
Our earlier price watcher read the going rate (the price most booking sites listed, before tax) for one stay, July 25 to 28, 2026, at 12 US hotels once a day from June 3. We ran the checker's rule on it from that first day: an alert when the going rate is at least 5% below the June 3 rate on two daily reads in a row.
| Hotel | June 3 | Lowest read | Alert fired | Last read against June 3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Napili Kai Beach Resort, Lahaina HI | $579 | $358 | dipped one day only | +4% |
| Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort, Honolulu HI | $418 | $373 | June 25 | +9% |
| The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas | $348 | $301 | June 20 | −11% |
| Pod 51 Hotel, New York NY | $224 | $172 | June 10 | +53% |
| The Standard High Line, New York NY | $414 | $414 | no | +53% |
| Hotel Zephyr Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco CA | $276 | $245 | July 20 | +1% |
| Fontainebleau Miami Beach | $428 | $323 | July 22 | −4% |
| The Roosevelt Hotel New Orleans | $295 | $262 | July 11 | +8% |
| Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles | $230 | $169 | June 16 | −10% |
| Aloft Boston Seaport District | $300 | $300 | no | +25% |
| Margaritaville Resort Orlando | $257 | $246 | no | +43% |
| citizenM Seattle South Lake Union | $238 | $238 | no | +21% |
- The alert fired at 7 of the 12 hotels, on dates from June 10 to July 22, 2026. At 1 more the rate dipped 5% below for a single day, which the two-day rule does not count.
- With a 10% line instead of 5%, the same rule fired at 6 of the 12.
- At 8 of the 12 the last read was more than 2% above June 3, and 3 of them had fired an alert on the way: a drop is often followed by a rise, so the alert is a moment to act, not a trend.
- Across 608 hotels priced twice a week apart for the same stay (181 priced September 22 and September 29, 2026 and 427 priced September 25 and October 2, 2026), the going rate fell 5% or more at 160 of 608 (26%) and rose 5% or more at 236 of 608 (39%).
So an alert does catch real drops: at 7 of these 12 hotels over seven weeks, and at 26% of hotels within one week. It cannot tell you which way the price goes next, which is why it pairs with a booking you can cancel.
Twelve hotels and one summer stay are a small sample: read them as a direction, not a rate. The going rate is the price most sources listed, not one room. The week-later pairs are from the hotel price study (US market, USD, hotels matched by Google's property id).
How an alert decides when to write
Underbook's checker states its rule: "We check the going rate for this hotel and these dates once a day and email you if it is at least 5% lower on two daily checks in a row." Requiring two days in a row means a one-day blip does not send an email; it also means the email comes a day after the drop.
KAYAK, which also sends hotel price alerts, says: "Most Price Alerts are sent once a day." For its real-time alerts: "These trigger when there’s a significant price change, typically a 10% increase or drop, since your last update." Source: KAYAK help, Pricing and Price Alerts, read October 25, 2026.
A higher line sends fewer emails: in our daily series a 10% line fired at 6 hotels where a 5% line fired at 7. Trackers by name, what each watches and what each costs: hotel price trackers, side by side.
What an alert cannot do
It cannot lower a price. It tells you a price you watch has dropped; you pay less only by booking the lower rate and cancelling the first booking, which a non-refundable rate does not allow.
It follows a number, not a room. A drop in the going rate can come from a smaller room or a rate with stricter terms on one site, so read the room name and the cancellation line before you rebook.
It cannot see member prices. Our figures are public prices a signed-out visitor gets; a member or package price can sit below them. More on what happens after you book: hotel price dropped after you booked?
How to make a hotel price alert pay off
- Book a refundable rate you are happy with, and note its free-cancellation deadline.
- Set an alert for that hotel and those dates, on the site you booked with or with a tracker that checks every day.
- When it writes, compare like with like: the same room, the same cancellation terms, the total with taxes and fees.
- Book the lower rate first, then cancel the first booking before its deadline.
Checking your own stay
Underbook is a free browser extension for Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and a free web price checker. For a hotel and dates it shows the price each booking site lists on Google Hotels, all-in where the sites report taxes and fees (a resort or destination fee may be extra), and says whether a lower listing names the same room or needs a check before you book. You always book on the site you choose. Its price-drop email checks the going rate once a day and writes when it drops at least 5% on two daily checks in a row.
Hotel price alerts: common questions
Do hotel price alerts work?
They catch real drops: run on our daily prices for 12 US hotels (one July 2026 stay, read once a day from June 3, 2026), a 5% drop alert would have fired at 7 of them. But the rate ended higher than on June 3 at 8 of the 12, so an alert helps only if your booking can be cancelled and rebooked.
How often does a hotel price drop within a week?
Often enough to watch. Across 608 hotels priced twice a week apart in September and October 2026, the going rate fell 5% or more at 160 (26%) and rose 5% or more at 236 (39%).
How do hotel price alerts decide when to email?
Each sets its own line. Underbook emails once when the going rate is at least 5% lower on two daily checks in a row. KAYAK says most of its alerts are sent once a day, and its real-time alerts trigger on a significant change, typically 10%, since your last update.
Are hotel price alerts reliable?
An alert reports a price that was listed when it checked; the room behind it and the cancellation terms can differ from your booking. Open the lower rate, check the room and the total with taxes and fees, and only then rebook.
Can Underbook alert me if my hotel price drops?
Yes, for free. Type the hotel and your dates into the price checker and add your email: it checks the going rate once a day across the booking sites and emails you when it is at least 5% lower on two daily checks in a row.
