Do hotel prices go down on the day of arrival?
Sometimes. More often, they went up.

Not as a rule: in the one series we have that reaches check-in day, 12 US hotels priced once a day for a July 25 to 28, 2026 stay, the going rate on check-in day was more than 2% higher than the day before at 5 of the 9 hotels still priced, more than 2% lower at 2, and within 2% at 2. Across 608 hotels priced twice a week apart in September and October 2026, the going rate a week nearer check-in was more than 2% higher at 273 of 608 (45%) and more than 2% lower at 201 (33%).

To check your own stay today, Underbook's free hotel price checker shows the price each booking site lists on Google Hotels for that hotel and dates, and whether a lower listing names the same room, and it can email you if the going rate for that stay drops: https://underbook.co/hotel-price-checker.

Check-in day, hotel by hotel

Our earlier price watcher read the going rate (the price most booking sites listed) for one stay, July 25 to 28, 2026, at 12 US hotels once a day from June 3. Its read on check-in day came at 16:15 UTC (9:15 in the morning in California, 12:15 in New York). 9 hotels had a price that day and the day before; 3 had none the watcher could read.

Against a week before, the check-in day rate was more than 2% higher at 6 of 9 and more than 2% lower at 3. Over the whole seven weeks, the last read was more than 2% higher than the first at 8 of the 12 hotels and more than 2% lower at 3.

Twelve hotels and one summer stay are a small sample: read them as a direction, not a rate. They do show that a day-of drop happens, at some hotels, and that it is not the usual case.

One stay, US hotels only, one read a day; the going rate is the price most sources listed, not a single room. The week-later figures are pairs from the hotel price study (US market, USD, hotels matched by Google's property id): 181 hotels priced September 22 and 29, 2026 and 427 priced September 25 and October 2, 2026.

Why the last day can go either way

A hotel that still has empty rooms on the day can lower its rate to fill them, which is where same-day discounts come from. A hotel that is nearly full has no reason to, and its remaining rooms are often the dearer ones. From outside you cannot see which kind of day your hotel is having, so waiting for check-in day is a bet.

The bet also costs choice: on a busy date the room you wanted may be gone by the morning. The full picture of how prices move as the date nears: do hotel prices drop closer to the date?

How to wait for a drop without risking the room

  1. Book a refundable rate you are happy with now, and note its free-cancellation deadline.
  2. Watch the price for your hotel and dates, by hand or with a price-drop email.
  3. On the morning of check-in, check again across the booking sites, for the same room.
  4. If it is lower and you are still inside the deadline, book the lower rate first, then cancel the first booking.

Checking your own stay

Underbook is a free browser extension for Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and a free web price checker. For a hotel and dates it shows the price each booking site lists on Google Hotels, all-in where the sites report taxes and fees (a resort or destination fee may be extra), and says whether a lower listing names the same room or needs a check before you book. You always book on the site you choose. Its price-drop email checks the going rate once a day and writes when it drops at least 5% on two daily checks in a row.

Day-of-arrival prices: common questions

Do hotel prices go down on the day of arrival?

Sometimes, but not as a rule. In our daily series of 12 US hotels for a July 25 to 28, 2026 stay, the going rate on check-in day was more than 2% higher than the day before at 5 of 9 hotels, lower at 2 and within 2% at 2.

Is it cheaper to book a hotel on the same day?

Not usually in our data. Same-day discounts exist at hotels with empty rooms, but a week nearer check-in the going rate was more than 2% higher at 273 of 608 hotels and lower at 201 in our September and October 2026 pairs.

Do hotels lower prices late in the day?

Our series read once a day, at 16:15 UTC (9:15 in the morning in California), so it cannot say what happens later the same day. Check again on the day if you are holding a refundable booking.

How can I wait for a lower price without losing the room?

Book a refundable rate now, watch the price, and rebook only if a lower rate for the same room appears before your free-cancellation deadline.

Can Underbook tell me if the price drops?

Yes. Type the hotel and your dates into the free price checker and add your email: it checks the going rate once a day across the booking sites and emails you when it drops at least 5% on two daily checks in a row.
