Is HotelTonight legit?
Yes. But last-minute is not always cheapest.
HotelTonight launched in 2010 as a same-day booking app and has been owned by Airbnb since 2019. So the company is real and the reservations go through and are honored at check-in. The reason this page exists is a quieter issue: the app is built on the promise of last-minute discounts, and travelers assume that means the lowest price. Sometimes it is. But hotels drop their own last-minute rates too, the same rooms are often sold on other sites, and HotelTonight only shows you its one curated price, not the whole market. The price is not fake. It is just easy to assume it wins without checking. Here is how to check.

"Last-minute" is a supply story, not a promise
HotelTonight's edge is real: when a hotel has empty rooms for tonight, it would rather sell them cheap through an app than leave them empty, and HotelTonight is where a lot of that unsold inventory lands. That is why the app can show a genuinely low rate. But the same pressure that discounts the app rate also discounts the hotel's own last-minute price and the same room on other booking sites. Last-minute demand is soft on all of them at once, so no single channel is sure to have the floor.
This is a specific case of a pattern in our own data: the same hotel shows different prices on different sites depending on which rates each one is holding and how it presents taxes and fees. With a curated last-minute app the risk is subtle: the number looks low enough, so you stop looking. The only fair comparison is the final, all-in total for the same room and dates.
Before you book a HotelTonight rate, check three things
- 1. The all-in total. Compare the price after taxes and fees, not the headline nightly rate in the app.
- 2. The hotel direct. Check the hotel's own site for the same night; last-minute rooms are often discounted there too.
- 3. The cancellation terms. Same-day app rates are usually prepaid and non-refundable, so book only when your plans are firm.
How to check the price yourself
Note the total the app will charge, including every fee. Then pull the same number from the hotel's own site and one other booking site for the same room and dates. Compare totals, not headline rates. If HotelTonight still wins after fees, and your plans are firm enough for a prepaid rate, it can be genuinely worth it, especially same-day.

Is HotelTonight a scam?
No. It's owned by Airbnb and the reservations are real and honored at check-in. The pattern behind most complaints is not fraud, it's a price surprise: the traveler saw a lower rate for the same night on the hotel's own site or another booking site afterward. If you compare final totals before you tap book, HotelTonight is simply a last-minute channel that sometimes wins and sometimes doesn't.
Does HotelTonight always have the lowest last-minute price?
No. It often has a strong same-day rate because it sells unsold inventory, but hotels discount their own last-minute rooms and the same rooms appear on other sites, so the floor moves around. The app shows one curated pick, not the whole market. Check the hotel direct and one other site for the same night before assuming HotelTonight is the lowest.
Can I book HotelTonight in advance or only same day?
Both. It started as a same-day-only app, but you can now book up to about 100 days out. The deepest discounts still tend to cluster around same-day and very near-term dates, because that is when hotels are most motivated to move unsold rooms. Further out, the advantage over other sites usually shrinks, so compare more carefully the earlier you book.
Can I cancel a HotelTonight booking?
Usually not for free. Last-minute app rates are typically prepaid with strict or no-refund cancellation, and cancellations go through HotelTonight rather than the hotel. Read the terms on the final screen before paying. With same-day rates, the low price and the tight cancellation policy come together, so book only when your plans are firm.
