Why is Booking.com cheaper than the hotel's website?
Usually it isn't: compared like with like at 3,345 hotel prices (September 25 to October 10, 2026), the hotel's own site was more than 2% lower at 26% and Booking.com at 13%. When Booking.com is lower, it says the hotel sets that rate, and that it may pay for rewards itself.
To compare Booking.com with the hotel's own site for your exact hotel and dates, Underbook's free hotel price checker shows the price each booking site lists on Google Hotels for that hotel and dates, and whether a lower listing names the same room: https://underbook.co/hotel-price-checker.

Measured, September 25 to October 10, 2026
Booking.com against the hotel's own site
In our 16 price snapshots of September 25 to October 10, 2026 (6,620 hotel prices), Google Hotels listed both the hotel's own site and Booking.com at 4,110. Compared like with like, at 3,345 of them:
| Hotels (compared) | Hotel's site lower | Booking.com lower | Within 2% |
|---|---|---|---|
| All hotels (3,345) | 26% | 13% | 61% |
| United States (2,048) | 17% | 9% | 74% |
| Europe (645) | 48% | 15% | 37% |
| Other Americas (318) | 36% | 21% | 43% |
| Asia-Pacific, Mideast, Africa (334) | 34% | 25% | 40% |
| Chain hotels (1,929) | 12% | 6% | 82% |
| Independent hotels (1,416) | 46% | 23% | 31% |
- When Booking.com was lower, it was typically 9% lower; when the hotel's site was lower, typically 10%.
- At chain hotels the two were within 2% at 82%; at independent hotels at only 31%, and there either side could be lower: Booking.com at 23%, the hotel's site at 46%.
- Where Booking.com was lower, its listing named the room at 370 of the 439 hotels and the hotel's at 187; Google's free-cancellation label showed on Booking.com's at 171 and on the hotel's at 159.
- At 433 more hotels one price sat near the before-tax going rate and the other near the all-in one, and at 332 the tax could not be read; both are left out, since a price without tax looks lower for that reason alone.
So a lower Booking.com price is the exception, not the rule, and at chain hotels it is rare. Where it happens, compare the room and the cancellation terms: a listed price alone does not show them.
Other Americas: the cities in the Americas outside the 50 states (Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Latin America); Asia-Pacific, Mideast, Africa: the study's Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa group. Within 2%: neither price more than 2% below the other. The hotel's own site is the seller Google Hotels lists under the hotel's exact name. Like with like: before tax against before tax and all-in against all-in. A price's basis is inferred from the hotel's two going rates (one nearer the before-tax going rate counts as before tax), only where taxes added 10% or more; a genuinely lower all-in price can sit there too, so the hotels where the two prices looked different are left out, not counted for either site. Hotels whose taxes added 2 to 10% are left out because no price's basis can be read there. Each snapshot: the lowest public price each booking site listed on Google Hotels for a US searcher, in US dollars, for a two-night stay, at one moment; not completed bookings, and not member or signed-in prices. A hotel priced in more than one snapshot counts once per snapshot. Method, charts and the per-hotel CSVs: the hotel price study.
Why Booking.com can be lower
The hotel sets the rate. Booking.com's page on how it works says: "The rates displayed on our Platform are set by the Service Providers." So a lower price there is a rate the hotel chose to list on Booking.com, and Booking.com is paid afterwards: "Once your stay is finished, the Service Provider just pays us a commission."
Booking.com can pay for a discount. The same page says: "We may finance rewards or other benefits out of our own pocket." Source: Booking.com, How we work (updated May 31, 2025), read October 25, 2026.
Member prices. "Genius is Booking.com's free loyalty program." Its first level brings "10% discounts on stays", and Booking.com adds: "To see all your available discounts, sign in before you start searching for an option to book." Our figures are the public prices a signed-out visitor gets, so a Genius price can be lower still, and a hotel's own member price too. Why the hotel's own site is lower more often
In our data the hotel's site was the lower one 2.0 times as often as Booking.com, mostly at independent hotels. A booking on the hotel's own site carries no booking-site commission (Booking.com's, quoted above, is paid on each stay), which gives a hotel a reason to list its own rate at or below the one it gives a booking site. Booking direct is not always lower, though: compare the two totals for the same room.

How to check before you book
- Open both prices for the same room and dates, on Booking.com and on the hotel's own site.
- Compare the cancellation terms. A non-refundable rate is a different product from a free-cancellation one.
- Compare totals with taxes and fees, not the first price: on US pages Booking.com adds the hotel's taxes as a separate line.
- Check a signed-in price on both, Genius on Booking.com and the hotel's member rate, if you have either.
Checking your own stay
Underbook is a free browser extension for Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and a free web price checker. For a hotel and dates it shows the price each booking site lists on Google Hotels, all-in where the sites report taxes and fees (a resort or destination fee may be extra), and says whether a lower listing names the same room or needs a check before you book. You always book on the site you choose. On a hotel page it lists the hotel's own site beside the booking sites when Google Hotels shows it.
Booking.com and the hotel's site: common questions
Why is Booking.com cheaper than the hotel website?
Usually it is not: like with like at 3,345 hotel prices in our 16 price snapshots of September 25 to October 10, 2026, the hotel's own site was more than 2% lower at 877 (26%) and Booking.com at 439 (13%). When Booking.com is lower, Booking.com says the hotel sets the rates it shows and that it may pay for rewards or other benefits itself.
Is it cheaper to book direct or on Booking.com?
At chain hotels the two were within 2% at 82% of hotels in our data. At independent hotels the gap is wider in both directions, and the hotel's own site was lower more often (46% against 23%). Compare the totals for the same room and terms.
Who sets the price on Booking.com?
The hotel. Booking.com's page on how it works says the rates displayed on its platform are set by the service providers, and that the provider pays Booking.com a commission once the stay is finished.
Is the lower Booking.com price the same room?
Not always. Where Booking.com was lower than the hotel's site, its listing named the room at 370 of 439 hotels. Open both, match the room name, bed type and cancellation terms, then compare.
Can the hotel's own site be lower than Booking.com?
Yes, and in our data it was, more often: more than 2% lower at 26% of hotels, typically by 10%. Member prices on either side can be lower again.
