Honest review
Is Hostelworld legit?
Yes. It books as the property's agent.
Hostelworld is a booking site for hostels that also lists hotels. Its terms name Hostelworld.com Limited, a company incorporated in Ireland, and say it acts only as the agent of the property: your contract for the stay is with the property. Depending on the rate, you pay the full price or a deposit when you book, plus a booking fee where one applies, and any balance to the property on arrival. Google Hotels listed it at 140 of the 5,830 hotels in our price snapshots, 72 of them in Europe. Here is what we measured, and what to check before you book.
Measured, not sponsored: the numbers come from our own price snapshots. If you book through a link from Underbook we may earn a commission from the booking site you choose, at no cost to you, and it does not change what we show.
The verdict, in plain terms
A legitimate booking site run by a named Irish company. It books as the property's agent, may charge a non-refundable booking fee, and in our data priced on its own.
What is true in its favor
- A named company: Hostelworld.com Limited, incorporated in Ireland (8 Harcourt Street, Dublin), per its terms; Hostelworld Group plc, the company its group website presents, is an active public limited company on the UK register (09818705)
- Founded in 1999, per its group's About page
- Its listings named a room at 61 of the 140 hotels and carried Google's free-cancellation label at 49
- Recorded as the lowest price at 15 hotels, 6 of them 5% or more below the going rate
Why you should be careful
- Its terms say it acts only as the property's agent: the contract for the stay is with the property, and any balance is paid to the property on arrival
- Its terms say a flat booking fee may apply when you book, and that it is non-refundable in all circumstances
- Where its price and Booking.com's differed on the same tax footing, Booking.com was lower at 52 hotels and Hostelworld at 23
- Listed at only 140 hotels, so these figures rest on few hotels
Read on October 2, 2026: Hostelworld's terms (hostelworld.com/legal/hostel-terms-and-conditions, last updated September 30, 2021), its group's About page (hostelworldgroup.com) and the UK Companies House record for Hostelworld Group plc. The Irish companies register refused our request, so Hostelworld.com Limited's own record was not checked. They can change.

How often Hostelworld had the lowest price
In the 14 price snapshots of September 25 to October 1, 2026 that recorded every booking site's price, we priced the same two-night stay at 5,830 hotels in 348 cities on every site Google Hotels listed. Hostelworld was listed at 140 of them (13 in the US). The study recorded Hostelworld as the lowest price at 15 of them, 6 of those 5% or more below the going rate (typically 28% below). At a further 9 it showed the same price as the listing recorded as lowest (when two sites show the same lowest rate, the study records the one Google listed first). For comparison, some site was 5% or more below the going rate at 4,181 of the 5,830 hotels, and Super.com was recorded as the lowest most often (1,193 hotels). Of Hostelworld's 140 hotels, 72 were in Europe, 37 in Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Africa, 18 in Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Latin America and 13 in the US.
Hostelworld next to Booking.com
Hostelworld usually priced on its own: it showed the same price as some other listed site at 61 of its 140 hotels, most often Vio.com (34), goSeek (28) and Etrip.net (25). At the 125 hotels where Hostelworld and Booking.com were both listed in our 14 price snapshots of September 25 to October 1, 2026, the two showed the same price at 20. Where the two differed on the same tax footing, Booking.com was lower at 52 and Hostelworld at 23; at 30 more the two prices could not be put on the same footing. See our Booking.com review.
Its listings carried Google's free-cancellation label at 49 of the 140 hotels (35%) and named a room at 61 (44%). A price with no room attached may be for the smallest or a non-refundable room, and you cannot tell from the listing.
These are prices from one moment in each snapshot, as Google Hotels showed them (all-in where the site reported taxes and fees, else the nightly rate), not completed bookings. Where two sites' prices differed, we say which was lower only when both were on the same tax footing (both before tax or both after), which we infer from the hotel's going rate with and without taxes, as on trivago vs Expedia. Method and the CSVs are on our hotel price study.
Before you book a Hostelworld price, check four things
- 1. Booking.com and the property's own site. Where Hostelworld's price and Booking.com's differed on the same tax footing in our data, Booking.com was lower at 52 hotels and Hostelworld at 23.
- 2. What you pay now and on arrival. Depending on the rate, you pay in full or a deposit when you book, and the balance to the property on arrival. Add any booking fee, which its terms say is non-refundable in all circumstances.
- 3. The room. Compare the room name and bed type with the room you would book elsewhere. Its listings named a room at 61 of 140 hotels in our data.
- 4. The cancellation terms. Its terms say that with free cancellation the deposit is refunded if you cancel before the time and date given when you book, and that with its Flexible Booking option the deposit comes back as a voucher for later bookings. See whether free cancellation is worth it.
Underbook (built by us) is a free browser extension that helps with the comparison while you shop. On a hotel page it shows other booking sites' prices for the same hotel and dates side by side, all-in where the sites report taxes and fees, and says whether a cheaper listing names the same room or needs a check before you book.
Hostelworld: common questions
Is Hostelworld legit?
Yes, it is a real booking site run by a named company: its terms name Hostelworld.com Limited, incorporated in Ireland, and its group company, Hostelworld Group plc, is an active public limited company on the UK companies register. Its group says Hostelworld was founded in 1999. It books as the property's agent, so the contract for your stay is with the property.
Who do I book with on Hostelworld?
The property. Hostelworld's terms say your contract for travel services, accommodation included, is with the travel services provider, not Hostelworld, because it acts only as the provider's agent.
