Honest, data-backed comparison
KAYAK vs Expedia.
Which is actually cheaper?
Short answer: close at 30% of hotels, and KAYAK was cheaper about twice as often when they differed. At the 1,537 hotels listed on both across our 14 price snapshots of September 25 to October 1, 2026, their lowest prices were within $2 a night of each other at 30% of hotels. When one was more than 2% cheaper, it was KAYAK at 692 hotels (45%) and Expedia at 357 (23%). They belong to rival companies. Neither was always cheaper, so check both for your own dates.

Measured, September 25 to October 1, 2026
What our price data shows
Across our 14 price snapshots of September 25 to October 1, 2026, 1,537 hotels were listed on both KAYAK and Expedia. Their lowest prices were within $2 a night of each other at 30% of them (467 hotels). The two showed the very same price at 21% of these hotels.
30%
within $2 a night of each other (467 of 1,537 hotels)
45%
KAYAK more than 2% cheaper (692 hotels)
23%
Expedia more than 2% cheaper (357 hotels)
So neither site was always cheaper for the same hotel and dates, but when their prices differed, KAYAK was the cheaper one about twice as often as Expedia (692 hotels to 357). When KAYAK was the cheaper one, it was typically 10% below Expedia.
Google Hotels showed no free-cancellation label and no room name on any KAYAK listing in our data, so these numbers cannot say whether KAYAK's cheaper rates were refundable or which room they were for. At the 692 hotels where KAYAK was more than 2% cheaper, Expedia's lowest listing carried the free-cancellation label at 38% of them and named a room type at 94%. Check the room and the cancellation terms on KAYAK before you book.
Where each one came out cheaper
By region, KAYAK's lead was largest in Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Africa: more than 2% cheaper at 53% of hotels there, Expedia at 15%. It went the other way in Europe (Expedia more than 2% cheaper at 36% of hotels, KAYAK at 23%). At chain hotels the two were within $2 at 34%; at independent hotels at 27%, and most of the gaps were there.
| Where | On both | Within $2 | KAYAK 2%+ cheaper | Expedia 2%+ cheaper |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| United States | 870 | 25% | 54% | 20% |
| Europe | 320 | 37% | 23% | 36% |
| Canada, Mexico, Caribbean, Latin America | 150 | 43% | 28% | 27% |
| Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Africa | 197 | 32% | 53% | 15% |
| Chain hotels | 738 | 34% | 51% | 14% |
| Independent hotels | 799 | 27% | 39% | 32% |
How we measured: in each snapshot we recorded every booking site's price that Google Hotels showed a US searcher, in US dollars, for a two-night stay checking in between October 30 and November 5, 2026, at 5,830 hotels in 348 cities. For each hotel we took each site's lowest price, all-in with taxes and fees where the site reported them, otherwise its listed rate, so part of a gap can be fees one site showed and the other did not. Within $2 means the two differed by $2 a night or less; more than 2% cheaper means one was below 98% of the other. The two can overlap on cheaper rooms (a $1.50 gap on a $60 room is both), which happened at 17 of these 1,537 hotels. A price we saw is one moment, not a completed booking. Who runs each site, and what else differs
KAYAK and Expedia are rival companies, and different kinds of site. KAYAK belongs to Booking Holdings (with Booking.com, Priceline and Agoda) and is a travel search engine that compares prices from hundreds of travel sites; Expedia belongs to Expedia Group (with Hotels.com, Vrbo, Orbitz and Travelocity), which calls it a full-service online travel brand.
- What KAYAK's lower price was. On September 30, 2026 we opened KAYAK's offer at 5 hotels where it had been the cheapest site in our data. Each time the price was KAYAK's own rate, with free cancellation, it matched what we had recorded to within $1 a night before tax, and the other sites listed for the same hotel on KAYAK's page were higher. So the saving we measured is the one you get by booking that KAYAK rate, not by clicking through from KAYAK to another site.
- Where you book, and what you earn. KAYAK is free to use: you usually click through and book with the hotel or booking site you pick, and pay them, though some listings let you book with a third-party provider without leaving KAYAK (KAYAK labels these "Book on KAYAK"). Expedia's One Key earns OneKeyCash when you travel, which you can spend on later bookings on Expedia, Hotels.com or Vrbo.
- The all-in total. Taxes and mandatory resort fees can appear at different steps of checkout on each site. A lower headline rate can carry a higher final total, so read the price after fees on both.
- Member and app prices. Signing in, or booking on the app, sometimes shows a lower price on either site than the one you see logged out. Our snapshots recorded the public prices Google Hotels showed, without signing in to either site.
- Cancellation terms. A cheaper rate is often a non-refundable one. Compare like with like, and see whether free cancellation is worth it.
How to actually decide, in two minutes
- Open the same room and dates on both. Read the price after taxes and fees on KAYAK and on Expedia, and check that the room and bed type match.
- Sign in and re-check. A member price or a loyalty discount can change the answer once you are logged in.
- Add the hotel's own site as a third quote. Loyalty points and perks with the hotel usually only earn when you book direct.
- If you are not in a hurry, watch it. Prices move with demand. Book a refundable rate and rebook if the price drops.

Doing this comparison automatically
Underbook is a free Chrome extension that runs this comparison while you shop. When you are viewing a hotel, it checks other booking sites for the same hotel and dates and shows the prices side by side: all-in, with taxes and fees, when the booking sites report them, otherwise the listed rate, labeled as such. When the cheaper listing does not name the same room, it says so plainly. You always book wherever you choose: KAYAK, Expedia, or direct. Prefer not to install anything? Expedia belongs to Expedia Group, like Hotels.com, Vrbo, Orbitz and Travelocity. Do you book on KAYAK or on Expedia?
KAYAK is a free travel search engine: you usually click through and book with the hotel or booking site you choose, and pay them, though some listings let you book with a third-party provider without leaving KAYAK. Expedia is a booking site in its own right, and its One Key program earns OneKeyCash you can spend on later Expedia, Hotels.com or Vrbo bookings. Either way, check who you are paying and the cancellation terms before you book.
