Honest, data-backed comparison
KAYAK vs Priceline.
Same owner, different jobs.
Short answer: KAYAK compares prices; Priceline sells the room, and Booking Holdings owns both. KAYAK is a travel search engine: you usually click through and book with the hotel or booking site you pick. Priceline is a booking site where you make the reservation. Google Hotels listed KAYAK next to Priceline at 1,551 hotels in our snapshots, and on the same tax footing their prices were within $2 a night at 68% of 944 hotels. Where they differed, KAYAK was cheaper a little more often than Priceline, but KAYAK's listed price was often before tax.

Measured, September 25 to October 1, 2026
What our price data shows
Across our 14 price snapshots of September 25 to October 1, 2026, Google Hotels listed Priceline as a seller at 4,380 of the 5,830 hotels we priced and KAYAK (any of its country sites) at 1,679. Both were listed at 1,551 hotels, and at 559 of them their lowest prices were the same to the dollar.
Before tax or after
At the 1,311 hotels listing both where taxes and fees added 10% or more to the going rate (the price most sites agreed on), KAYAK's price sat nearer the before-tax going rate at 492 of them and Priceline's at 115. Where one of the two prices looked before tax and the other after (415 hotels), the before-tax one looked lower at every one. Part or all of such a gap can be tax that is added at checkout, so those hotels are left out of the counts below.
On the same tax footing
Counting only the 944 hotels where both prices were on the same footing (both after tax, both before tax, or no tax showing in the going rates: under 2%, often because no site reported taxes separately), their prices were within $2 a night of each other at 68% of them (641 hotels).
68%
within $2 a night of each other (641 of 944 hotels)
18%
KAYAK more than 2% cheaper (173 hotels)
15%
Priceline more than 2% cheaper (137 hotels)
So, on the same footing, KAYAK was cheaper a little more often than Priceline (173 hotels to 137). When KAYAK was the cheaper one, it was typically 7% below Priceline; when Priceline was, 6% below KAYAK. Leaving out the hotels whose going rates showed under 2% tax, 896 hotels remain, where taxes added 10% or more and each price's basis could be read: KAYAK was more than 2% cheaper at 162 of them and Priceline at 131.
By region, and chain or independent
| Group of hotels | Hotels | KAYAK 2%+ cheaper | Priceline 2%+ cheaper |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | 494 | 23% | 10% |
| Europe | 242 | 12% | 20% |
| Canada, Mexico, Caribbean, Latin America | 114 | 17% | 7% |
| Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Africa | 94 | 12% | 33% |
| Chain hotels | 396 | 21% | 16% |
| Independent hotels | 548 | 16% | 14% |
What the lower price came with: At the 173 hotels where KAYAK was more than 2% cheaper, Google Hotels showed no free-cancellation label or room name on any KAYAK listing; Priceline's offered free cancellation at 39% and named a room type at 27%. At the 137 hotels where Priceline was more than 2% cheaper, its listing offered free cancellation at 19% and named a room type at 43%; KAYAK's listings never showed either. Check the room and the cancellation terms before you take the lower one.
The study's own count, on before-tax prices across all 15 snapshots (6,254 hotel prices in 348 cities): some site was 5% or more below the going rate at 4,512 of them, and the lowest price was KAYAK's at 271 of them and Priceline's at 76.
How we measured: in each snapshot we recorded every booking site's price that Google Hotels showed a US searcher, in US dollars, for a two-night stay checking in between October 30 and November 5, 2026, at 5,830 hotels in 348 cities. For each hotel we took each site's lowest price, all-in with taxes and fees where the site reported them, otherwise its listed rate. Our data keeps one price per listing without saying whether it includes tax, so we infer it: where the hotel's after-tax going rate was 10% or more above its before-tax going rate, a price nearer the after-tax one counts as after tax and a price nearer the before-tax one as before tax; where the after-tax going rate was under 2% above the before-tax one (often because no site reported taxes separately), any two prices count as the same footing; hotels in between are left out. Within $2 means the two differed by $2 a night or less; more than 2% cheaper means one was below 98% of the other. The study's regions put Dubai, Doha, Tel Aviv, Istanbul, Cape Town and Marrakech with Asia-Pacific. A price we saw is one moment, not a completed booking. Method and the CSVs: our hotel price study.
Who runs each site, and how booking works
- KAYAK is, in Booking Holdings' words, a meta-search service that compares prices from hundreds of online travel platforms at once. KAYAK is free to use. When you click through to book, you leave KAYAK and book with that travel provider, and you never pay KAYAK directly; some listings let you book with a third-party provider without leaving KAYAK, which KAYAK labels "Book on KAYAK".
- What KAYAK's price on Google Hotels was. On September 30, 2026 we opened KAYAK's offer at 5 hotels where it had been the cheapest site in our data. Each time KAYAK's page showed the price as KAYAK's own rate, with free cancellation, within $1 a night of what we had recorded before tax, and the other sites on the same KAYAK page were higher. Five hotels is a spot check, not a measurement.
- Priceline is a booking site where you make the reservation. Booking Holdings describes it as a leader in discount travel reservations, mainly in North America.
- Who owns whom. KAYAK says it is owned by Booking Holdings, which acquired it in 2013; Booking Holdings lists Booking.com, Priceline, Agoda, KAYAK and OpenTable as its five main consumer brands. Same owner, separate prices.
- Loyalty. Priceline VIP is free and multi-tier, with status based on the number of trips you complete. Priceline also sells Express Deals, where you pay before you learn the hotel's name; those are not the public prices we compared. A member price now and credit for later are different things, so compare the price after any member discount, all-in.
- The all-in total. Taxes and mandatory resort fees can appear at different steps of checkout on each site. A lower headline rate can carry a higher final total, so read the price after fees on both.
How to use them, in two minutes
- Use KAYAK or Google Hotels to see who lists your hotel. Both show many booking sites at once; here is which sites Google Hotels showed in our data.
- Compare the total after tax. On Google Hotels a KAYAK price was often before tax while Priceline's usually included it.
- Check the room and the cancellation terms. No KAYAK listing in our data named the room or carried a free-cancellation label on Google Hotels; see whether free cancellation is worth it.
- Know who you pay. Through KAYAK you usually book and pay the site you click through to; on Priceline, Priceline handles the booking.

Doing this comparison automatically
Underbook is a free browser extension for Chrome, Edge and Firefox that runs this comparison while you shop. When you are viewing a hotel, it checks other booking sites for the same hotel and dates and shows the prices side by side: all-in, with taxes and fees, when the booking sites report them, otherwise the listed rate, labeled as such. When the cheaper listing does not name the same room, it says so plainly. You always book wherever you choose: through KAYAK, on Priceline, or direct. Prefer not to install anything? KAYAK vs Priceline: common questions
Is KAYAK or Priceline cheaper?
In our snapshots of September 25 to October 1, 2026, KAYAK and Priceline were both listed at 1,551 hotels. Where both prices were on the same tax footing (944 hotels), they were within $2 a night of each other at 68%, and KAYAK was more than 2% cheaper a little more often (173 hotels to 137). Counting only the hotels where taxes added 10% or more, KAYAK was more than 2% cheaper at 162 and Priceline at 131. KAYAK's price on Google Hotels was often before tax while Priceline's usually included it, so compare the totals at checkout.
Does Priceline own KAYAK?
Booking Holdings owns both. KAYAK's own company page says it is owned by Booking Holdings, which acquired it in 2013, and Booking Holdings lists Booking.com, Priceline, Agoda, KAYAK and OpenTable as its five main consumer brands. They are separate sites with separate prices.
Do you book on KAYAK or on Priceline?
KAYAK is free to use: when you click through to book, you leave KAYAK and book with that travel provider, and you never pay KAYAK directly, though some listings let you book with a third-party provider without leaving KAYAK. Priceline is a booking site: you make the reservation there, and it also sells Express Deals, where you pay before you learn the hotel's name.
Why does KAYAK show a lower price than Priceline?
Often because of tax. In our Google Hotels data, KAYAK's price was often before tax while Priceline's included it: at the 415 hotels where one price looked before tax and the other after, the before-tax one looked lower at every one, and it was KAYAK's at 396. On the same tax footing, KAYAK was more than 2% cheaper a little more often (173 hotels to 137). By region, KAYAK was more than 2% cheaper at 113 of 494 US hotels and Priceline at 49; in Europe KAYAK at 30 of 242 and Priceline at 49.
How do I compare KAYAK and Priceline prices for my hotel?
Open the same room and dates on both, read the total after taxes and fees, and check the cancellation terms. Underbook, a free browser extension for Chrome, Edge and Firefox, shows booking sites' prices for your hotel and dates side by side, all-in where the sites report taxes and fees, and says whether the cheaper listing names your room.
