Honest, data-backed comparison
trivago vs Hotels.com.
Same owner, different jobs.
Short answer: trivago compares prices; Hotels.com sells the room. trivago is a metasearch: it lines up prices from many booking sites, and you book on the site you pick. Hotels.com is a booking site for places to stay. Expedia Group runs Hotels.com and is trivago's majority shareholder. trivago also runs a booking site of its own, trivago DEALS, and Google Hotels listed it next to Hotels.com at 1,705 hotels in our snapshots. Compared on the same tax footing, trivago DEALS was cheaper about twice as often as Hotels.com, but its listed price was often before tax.
Measured, not sponsored: the numbers come from our own price snapshots. If you book through a link from Underbook we may earn a commission from the booking site you choose, at no cost to you, and it does not change what we show.
Measured, September 25 to October 1, 2026
What our price data shows
Across our 14 price snapshots of September 25 to October 1, 2026, Google Hotels listed Hotels.com as a seller at 4,433 of the 5,830 hotels we priced and trivago DEALS at 1,895. trivago's comparison search sends you elsewhere to book, so the trivago price you can set against Hotels.com's is trivago DEALS'. Both were listed at 1,705 hotels, and at 89 of them their lowest prices were the same to the dollar.
Before tax or after
At the 1,340 hotels listing both where taxes and fees added 10% or more to the going rate (the price most sites agreed on), trivago DEALS' price sat nearer the before-tax going rate at 743 of them and Hotels.com's at 62. Where one of the two prices looked before tax and the other after (731 hotels), the before-tax one looked lower at every one. Part or all of such a gap can be tax that is added at checkout, so those hotels are left out of the counts below.
On the same tax footing
Counting only the 813 hotels where both prices were on the same footing (both after tax, both before tax, or no tax showing in the going rates: under 2%, often because no site reported taxes separately), their prices were within $2 a night of each other at 24% of them (192 hotels).
24%
within $2 a night of each other (192 of 813 hotels)
48%
trivago DEALS more than 2% cheaper (391 hotels)
25%
Hotels.com more than 2% cheaper (205 hotels)
So, on the same footing, trivago DEALS was cheaper about twice as often as Hotels.com (391 hotels to 205). When trivago DEALS was the cheaper one, it was typically 5% below Hotels.com; when Hotels.com was, 9% below trivago DEALS. Leaving out the hotels whose going rates showed under 2% tax, 609 hotels remain, where taxes added 10% or more and each price's basis could be read: trivago DEALS was more than 2% cheaper at 240 of them and Hotels.com at 177.
By region, and chain or independent
| Group of hotels | Hotels | trivago DEALS 2%+ cheaper | Hotels.com 2%+ cheaper |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | 451 | 55% | 19% |
| Europe | 215 | 32% | 37% |
| Canada, Mexico, Caribbean, Latin America | 101 | 55% | 24% |
| Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Africa | 46 | 39% | 35% |
| Chain hotels | 426 | 53% | 17% |
| Independent hotels | 387 | 43% | 34% |
What the lower price came with: At the 391 hotels where trivago DEALS was more than 2% cheaper, Google Hotels showed no free-cancellation label or room name on any trivago DEALS listing; Hotels.com's offered free cancellation at 24% and named a room type at 90%. At the 205 hotels where Hotels.com was more than 2% cheaper, its listing offered free cancellation at 37% and named a room type at 91%; trivago DEALS' listings never showed either. Check the room and the cancellation terms before you take the lower one.
The study's own count, on before-tax prices across all 15 snapshots (6,254 hotel prices in 348 cities): some site was 5% or more below the going rate at 4,512 of them, and the lowest price was trivago DEALS' at 210 of them and Hotels.com's at 97.
How we measured: in each snapshot we recorded every booking site's price that Google Hotels showed a US searcher, in US dollars, for a two-night stay checking in between October 30 and November 5, 2026, at 5,830 hotels in 348 cities. For each hotel we took each site's lowest price, all-in with taxes and fees where the site reported them, otherwise its listed rate. Our data keeps one price per listing without saying whether it includes tax, so we infer it: where the hotel's after-tax going rate was 10% or more above its before-tax going rate, a price nearer the after-tax one counts as after tax and a price nearer the before-tax one as before tax; where the after-tax going rate was under 2% above the before-tax one (often because no site reported taxes separately), any two prices count as the same footing; hotels in between are left out. Within $2 means the two differed by $2 a night or less; more than 2% cheaper means one was below 98% of the other. The study's regions put Dubai, Doha, Tel Aviv, Istanbul, Cape Town and Marrakech with Asia-Pacific. A price we saw is one moment, not a completed booking. Method and the CSVs: our hotel price study.
Who runs each site, and how booking works
- trivago describes itself as a metasearch engine that compares accommodation prices from many booking sites. The booking and the payment are handled by the site you click through to, so trivago cannot manage or cancel your reservation.
- trivago DEALS is different: trivago calls it a licensed trivago brand and booking site run by its subsidiary trivago DEALS Ltd. You book directly with it, and its own support team handles the booking.
- Hotels.com is a booking site that, in Expedia Group's words, focuses on lodging accommodations. Expedia's One Key earns OneKeyCash when you travel, which you can spend on later bookings on Expedia, Hotels.com or Vrbo.
- Who owns whom. Expedia Group runs Hotels.com, and trivago's own annual report names Expedia Group as its majority shareholder. Same owner, separate prices: see which sites Expedia owns, and whether their prices match.
- The all-in total. Taxes and mandatory resort fees can appear at different steps of checkout on each site. A lower headline rate can carry a higher final total, so read the price after fees on both.
How to use them, in two minutes
- Use a comparison to see who lists your hotel. trivago and Google Hotels both show many booking sites at once; here is which sites Google Hotels showed in our data.
- Compare the total after tax. On Google Hotels a trivago DEALS price was often before tax while Hotels.com's usually included it.
- Check the room and the cancellation terms. No trivago DEALS listing in our data named the room or carried a free-cancellation label; see whether free cancellation is worth it.
- Know who handles your booking. Through trivago's comparison you book with the site you click through to; on trivago DEALS or Hotels.com, that site handles it.

Doing this comparison automatically
Underbook is a free browser extension for Chrome, Edge and Firefox that runs this comparison while you shop. When you are viewing a hotel, it checks other booking sites for the same hotel and dates and shows the prices side by side: all-in, with taxes and fees, when the booking sites report them, otherwise the listed rate, labeled as such. When the cheaper listing does not name the same room, it says so plainly. You always book wherever you choose: trivago DEALS, Hotels.com, or direct. Prefer not to install anything? trivago vs Hotels.com: common questions
Is trivago or Hotels.com cheaper?
trivago itself does not sell rooms: it compares other booking sites' prices and sends you to one of them. Its own booking site, trivago DEALS, and Hotels.com were both listed at 1,705 hotels in our snapshots of September 25 to October 1, 2026. Where both prices were on the same tax footing (813 hotels), they were within $2 a night of each other at 24%, and trivago DEALS was more than 2% cheaper about twice as often (391 hotels to 205). Counting only the hotels where taxes added 10% or more, trivago DEALS was more than 2% cheaper at 240 and Hotels.com at 177. trivago DEALS' price was often before tax while Hotels.com's usually included it, so compare the totals at checkout.
Does Hotels.com own trivago?
Not Hotels.com itself. Expedia Group, which runs Hotels.com, is trivago's majority shareholder according to trivago's own annual report, and lists trivago among its brands. trivago is a separately listed company that compares prices from many booking sites, Hotels.com among them.
What is the difference between trivago and Hotels.com?
trivago is a metasearch: it compares accommodation prices from many booking sites, and the booking and the payment are handled by the site you click through to, so trivago cannot manage or cancel your reservation. Hotels.com is a booking site for places to stay, and its rewards program, One Key, is shared with Expedia and Vrbo. trivago also runs a booking site, trivago DEALS, which it describes as a licensed trivago brand run by its subsidiary trivago DEALS Ltd.
Why does trivago show a lower price than Hotels.com?
Two common reasons. trivago shows the prices booking sites send it, and trivago's help pages say those rates change constantly and can sell out, so the booking site can show a different price. And in our Google Hotels data, trivago DEALS' price was often before tax while Hotels.com's included tax: at the 731 hotels where one price looked before tax and the other after, the before-tax one looked lower at every one, and it was trivago DEALS' at 706. Compare the totals after tax.
How do I compare trivago and Hotels.com prices for my hotel?
Open the same room and dates on both, read the total after taxes and fees, and check the cancellation terms. Underbook, a free browser extension for Chrome, Edge and Firefox, shows booking sites' prices for your hotel and dates side by side, all-in where the sites report taxes and fees, and says whether the cheaper listing names your room. You can also check a hotel on underbook.co without installing anything.
