Honest review
Tripadvisor is best known for traveler reviews, and its hotel prices also show up on Google Hotels under the name "Tripadvisor.com" next to Expedia and Booking.com. Its terms name Tripadvisor LLC, of Needham, Massachusetts, as the company behind the site, and say plainly that Tripadvisor does not itself sell travel reservations: a third-party supplier does. In our own data it was the cheapest site for 18 hotel prices, most often in the US. But those cheapest listings never named the room. Here is what we measured and how to check a Tripadvisor price before you pay.
We have no affiliate relationship with Tripadvisor. Underbook (built by us) leads with the lowest price it finds, whoever lists it, and says whether it names your room.
A real, public company. Its low hotel price is a lead to check: the listing does not say which room it is, and the booking is a contract with a supplier, not with Tripadvisor.
What is true in its favor
Why you should be careful
Company details read from Tripadvisor's Terms of Use (effective July 15, 2025), its site footer and its About us page on September 30, 2026. They can change.
Measured, September 2026
Across 9 snapshots taken between September 22 and September 29, 2026, we recorded every booking site's price that Google Hotels showed for the same two-night stay, 3,753 hotel prices in 199 cities. At 2,760 of them some site was 5% or more below the rate most sites agreed on. Tripadvisor was the cheapest site at 14 of those 2,760, twenty-first overall and typically 18% below the going rate: 9 in the US, 3 elsewhere in the Americas, 2 in Europe, 0 in Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
16 of the 18 times Tripadvisor had the lowest price were at independent hotels, 2 at chains. Its largest gap stands out: 44% below the going rate at YOTEL Washington DC (Washington DC); the next was 25% at Hôtel Manoir Victoria (Quebec City). And across all 18, its listing named the room 0 times. When Agoda was cheapest it named the room at 147 of 232 hotels; Booking.com at 159 of 211; Vio.com at 56 of 342. A price with no room attached may be for the smallest or a non-refundable room, and you cannot tell from the listing.
These are before-tax prices from one moment in each snapshot, not completed bookings. Method and the CSVs are on our hotel price study.
Underbook (built by us) is a free Chrome extension that does the first two for you while you shop. On a hotel page it shows other booking sites' prices for the same hotel and dates side by side, and says whether a cheaper listing names the same room or needs a check before you book. We earn nothing from Tripadvisor.
Yes, it is a real company. Tripadvisor's terms of use name Tripadvisor LLC, a Delaware company at 400 1st Avenue, Needham, Massachusetts, as the provider of the site; its parent, Tripadvisor, Inc., trades on Nasdaq as TRIP. But its terms also say Tripadvisor does not itself sell travel reservations: when you book, the contract is solely between you and a third-party supplier. Treat its low hotel price as a lead to check: in our data its cheapest hotel listings never named the room.
Sometimes. In our September 2026 price snapshots Tripadvisor was the cheapest site at 14 hotels where some site was 5% or more below the going rate, typically 18% below, 9 of them in the US. Across 3,753 hotel prices in 199 cities that is a small share: most of the time another site was lower. At none of the 18 times it had the lowest price did its listing name the room.
A third-party supplier, not Tripadvisor. Its terms say Tripadvisor is not the buyer or seller of the reservation, not a party to the contract and not an agent of either side, that you agree to the supplier's terms, and that the supplier, not Tripadvisor, processes your payment and fulfills the reservation. Its site footer adds that Tripadvisor LLC is not a booking agent and asks you to check the partner's site for all fees.
That depends on the supplier you book with. Tripadvisor's terms say your rights on refunds and cancellations are between you and the third party, under your contract with that supplier. Check the cancellation policy shown before you pay.
No. Tripadvisor is best known for traveler reviews, and a hotel can be well reviewed there whichever site sells the room. The prices come from suppliers, and its terms say the Tripadvisor companies are not responsible for the accuracy or completeness of information they get from suppliers. Compare the price on its own terms.
Underbook is a free Chrome extension that shows every site's price for your hotel and dates side by side and says whether the cheaper listing names your room. You can also check a hotel on underbook.co without installing anything.
